People often ask, do the Newfies enjoy their work? Listen, as Chewbacca shares in his own voice what therapy work means to him.
BISS GCHS TimberKnolls Courage in the Sky Gold Cup - Amelia has been invited to attend Westminster for the second year in a row! She is the #1 Newfoundland Show Girl in America and has judges falling in love with her from coast to coast. It may be those giant soulful eyes, the graceful way she moves across the show ring, head held high, or very simply, that this precious girl is the epitome of what you'd wish a Newfoundland dog to be. She's loving, kind, compassionate, playful, brave, and friendly. She's also a Therapy Dog. When Amelia isn't in the show ring and on tour, visiting with all of her fans, she visits with Veterans, first responders, health care workers, and patients overcoming illness and trauma. She gravitates to those who need her, in a way only a natural therapy dog can do. No matter how successful and famous she's become or how far she's traveled, she's just a sweet girl who wants to make everyone she meets feel joy.
Newfoundland Club of America's Heroic Newfoundland of 2017 - Bruno
Many breeds of dogs have come from generations of serving others and the Newfoundland is no exception to that innate desire. They not only thrive in a loving home, but their natural ability to save a human life or work to serve others creates pleasure that is impossible to ignore. As therapy dogs, they work in hospitals visiting the sick or comforting veterans or simply allowing a young child to nestle in their fur as they learn to read. They gain physical strength supporting their long term health, by learning water rescue techniques or pulling a draft cart but most of all, they live happier, more fulfilling lives by giving to others... it's simply their nature.
Benjamin is a champion. A kitchen dog sous chef, he's often found stretched out beneath the feet of whoever happens to be cooking. He adores helping to bake cookies and eat them voraciously. He has a huge heart, almost as big as his massive head. He embraces your spirit through his eyes, loves to be talked to and to be hugged.
She is a Champion, earning her Rally Novice title and the Matriarch of the TimberKnoll pack. She is gentle in spirit yet stands strong, always teaching the younger pups how to be respectful. She'll quietly place her head under your hands letting you know it's time for a hug, and she loves to perform water rescue training exercises.
Mason holds the rare title of Versatile Newfoundland, she has gained titles in Water Rescue, Obedience, Conformation, Draft work and even team Draft Work. She's a champion across the board and has tremendous maternal instincts She loves to give hugs and air kisses.
Milan is strong and spirited. She's feisty and independent, it's not at all unusual for her to find a way to race through a gate and take off for a swim across the lake. She could easily pass her water rescue test but would rather chase ducks than prove herself. As naughty as she can be, she is equally as affectionate. This girl will steal your heart before you know what hit you.
Chewie is big, really, really big. He may be one of the tallest Newfoundland dogs in the country. He's a HUGE kisser and he'll wash your face before you see it coming. Chewie loves visiting patients in hospitals and working with people who are overcoming illness or trauma. His size is a reflection of his pure and beautiful heart.
Amelia may be a Grand Champion and the #1 Newfoundland dog in the country, but she's not just a pretty girl. She travels the country to appear at dog shows, but she also loves to meet with first responders and people who need a ray of Newfie sunshine in their lives. She's a total lovebug!
Abraham moves so fast that sometimes you don't even see him coming. He's a total lapdog and doesn't understand why, at 140 lbs he doesn't fit on everyone's lap. When he races in the house he can fly, jumping from one sofa to the next very similar to his sister Amelia. He'll be shaking a toy at you, begging for a game of tug of war. Scratch him under the chin and you'll have a lifelong friend.
Grace is our little miracle dog. She's the youngest in the group and a survivor of a rare heart defect that required emergency surgery in her first months of life. She's is wise beyond her years, has a generous spirit and will share all of her toys without missing a beat. She'll be your best friend if you don't mind her sitting on the furniture, gazing at you steadily with pure adoration and joy.
Bentley is already a life saver. He’s been a blood donor for dogs in need of life saving transfusions and is trained in water rescue work. He's overcome neglect from his first human family but he’s only grown more loving for all the hardships he’s overcome. He just earned his Canine Good Citizen's Advanced title and we're so proud of him!
We could not have been more thrilled when the Diehl family of therapy Newfies joined our extended Newfie Therapy team. These magnificents Newfoundlands are playful, loving and are cherished instantly, by anyone who meets them. They've served in most of the major Charleston, SC area hospitals and even volunteer with the Red Cross. They come from a military family and so they are naturals when it comes to helping Veterans.
Jazz is a star. We learned of her long before she joined our Newfie Therapy team as we'd heard about her on every visit that Chewie made to his favorite hospital. It was 'Jazz' does this and 'Jazz' does that, everyone loves 'Jazz'. Once we met her we understood why, not only is she gorgeous, will wear costumes for every holiday and has the silkiest long hair but she is such a gentle soul you can't help but melt when she turns her huge deep brown eyes in your direction.
Sweet Jazz passed recently at far too young an age. Patients across SC are mourning her sudden passing, and our heart is broken for her loss.
Ella is beloved by all who meet her. She's a champion herself but you'd never know it by her calm and loving presence. All she seems to care about it curling up with anyone who needs some cheering up, but the moment she steps in the show ring her chest puffs out and she glides across the ring like the star she was meant to be.
Ronin is one of the strongest Water Rescue dogs we've ever met, he literally flies off a boat when he thinks a victim needs saving. All those water rescue skills don't take away from his healing ways, he's served over 500 hours at local area universities, hospitals and helping children heal at the Ronald McDonald House.
Declan is a therapy dog in training and has his big brother Ronin to learn from. His white blaze on his chest makes him unforgettable and his playful nature will leave any patient hoping for more and full of silly, joy.
Apollo is more than just a pretty boy. He may have earned his Grand Championship in the show ring without missing a beat but his heart is always open to a person in need. He's a cuddler and a softy, who will befriend anyone who needs a little love.
Winston has an incredible gift for children. He seems to sense when they really need him. He spends a lot of time walking the hallways of hospitals, searching for those young patients who are afraid or in pain. Even the nurses have come to rely on him when one of their youngest patients needs his eyes to gaze into to get through a painful procedure.
Mercy Me! She is the queen of the South! This gorgeous girl never stops sharing her love. She's big, just like a Newfie should be, and she walks the hospital hallways at her own, graceful pace. Her tail never stops wagging, and her massive, gentle eyes win over every stressed-out doctor or patient. There isn't a person that doesn't melt when she gazes their way.
You've never met a dog as sweet as Nevie. She's happy just gazing into your eyes, looking deep into your soul as if to ask, what do you need from me today? She loves dressing up and is often seen in Minnie Mouse ears or giant bows. She lights up the hearts of all she meets!
Ozzy isn't a therapy dog in the traditional sense. He shares his love over the internet, on Facebook, and on Instagram. He's famous for always having a toy in his mouth and for his goofy expressions. Ozzy performs what we call 'ARE's' or Animal-Related Engagements. He spreads joy through his antics electronically and has developed his international fan club.
Ruby is sweet and a little bit shy, but never too shy that she doesn't hesitate to help brighten a patient's mood when feeling down or afraid. She's visited the pediatric wards of hospitals and loves to be patted. If she had her way, she'd bring a toy to every child she meets. She's not just about the children though, patients of all ages feel better when she's near.
Rook is enormous, really huge, but he's a true lap dog. If he had his way, he'd kiss everyone he met, and then he'd stretch his massive body out and climb up onto their nearest lap. He loves visiting with veterans and first responders, getting his belly scratched, and chasing balls. Mostly, he's just a big, affectionate goofball. He's the dog that would make friends with a goose, because why not? Everyone needs a friend.
Bruno doesn't just help heroes, and he is one. He helped save his human mother from a home invader, and his bravery earned him the 'National Heroic Newfoundland' award from the Newfoundland Club of America. He is gentle, affectionate, and loyal. A lifeguard in the truest sense of the word.
She may be 11 years old, but that's not slowing her down at all! Ellie has been doing therapy work for many years with her Mom Kathy and is certified with KPets in Pennsylvania. She's trained in water rescue and therapy work, and she's one of the most affectionate and gentle spirits you'll ever meet.

She's just a few months old but she's already wanting to wear the vest. Watch out, Poppy will be a therapy dog before you know it.
